A to Z Challenge 2020 - L

The Blogging from A to Z Challenge is to post everyday (except Sunday) in the month of April 2020 starting with the letter A and going all the way to Z. My theme is...
Ancestor Occupations

LANDLORD

Robert Frost, born 1774 in Moretonhampstead, Devon, a son of Gilbert Frost and Sarah Mudge, was my 4th great grandfather.

Owing to the online Diary of Silvester Treleaven I have learned quite a bit about my Moretonhampstead ancestors.

Robert Frost became Landlord of the Black Horse Inn, at the age of 26, even if for a short time.

1800: "Tues October 21st, Mr Robert Frost took and entered the Black Horse."

1801: "Mon. July 20th.  Great preparations making on Mardon Down to accommodate those who intend attending the Races. Mr. Hancock, London Inn, Mr. Thorn, Bell Inn, Mr. Cann, Red Lion, Mr. R. Frost, Black Horse, and Mr. Tozer, Dolphin Inn, are errecting large and commodious booths, Mr. Hancock’s is about 60 feet in length"
1802: "Sat. May 1st.  Mr. John Gray, has taken the old Black Horse, lately occupied by Mr. R. Frost, and this day began to sell beer."

...changed its name in May 1802 to the Golden Lion Inn

In 1803 Robert Frost substituted for Gilbert Frost in the East Devon Militia for about 14 guineas (a guinea was just over a pound). He was sworn in on 8 July 1803.

1803: "Wed. June 22nd.  Mr. Gilbert Frost, Farmer, & Robert Tremlett Husbandman were drawn in the Supplementary Militia for this Parish,  Both got substitutes, at about 14 Guineas each."
1803: "Fri. July 8th.  Robert Frost & George Tremlett, sworn as substitutes in the East Devon Militia."

Robert Frost served in the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and was discharged from the military as a sergeant 24 July 1825.

Robert died 17 March 1833 at the age of 58.

  1. I’d have thought that staying as landlord would have been better than taking the substitution to the militia and being in the Napoleonic Wars. He must have enjoyed it though given his length of service.
