A to Z Challenge - A

The Blogging from A to Z Challenge is to post everyday (except Sunday) in the month of April 2016 starting with the letter A and going all the way to Z. The theme I chose is Genealogy Tips. At the end I will give a related post from my blog Genealogy: Beyond the BMD.

A is for Almanack

An Almanack comes in handy in writing your family stories. This 1809 Almanack of Scotland (Edinburgh and Glasgow) is typical of an almanack and a wealth of information. This copy must have belonged to someone, there are notations at the beginning.

The calendar has sun and moon cycles, holidays, feast days, tides, gardening tips and hunting times. Then goes on with many lists of names that could prove valuable to your research. Here is the Index...

  1. Good tip! Anyone wishing to add some color to the drab facts of birth and death dates of an ancestor's story would do well to consult an Almanac.

  3. I enjoy reading about sources. Almanacks may not give new information, but it s still fascinating to see a familiar name in a book written in an ancestor's lifetime.
