A to Z Challenge - B

The Blogging from A to Z Challenge is to post everyday (except Sunday) in the month of April 2016 starting with the letter A and going all the way to Z. The theme I chose is Genealogy Tips. At the end I will give a related post from my blog Genealogy: Beyond the BMD.

B is for Burials

I like to add all my burials to Find-a-Grave because I can link all family members, even if they are not buried at the same cemetery, or even in the same country!  Find-a-Grave is owned by Ancestry so it can also be linked to a persons profile on your tree.

My Porter family from Ulverton, Quebec is a good example.

While John Porter is buried in Kirkdale with some family members, his sisters Mary and Margaret are buried in California. Of his children Mary Jane is buried in Montreal, Ernest is buried in Berlin, New Hampshire, Richard Myrvin is buried in California, Margaret Salome is buried in Calgary, Alberta, and Lilis Nita is buried in Woodsville, New Hampshire. He also has siblings buried in Wisconsin.

His widowed sister Dora was staying at the Home For Indigent in Philadelphia when she died.  Her body was given (with consent?) to the Anatomical Board for medical research. I have no idea if any of her was buried, but I made a memorial for her also. You can also make a memorial for those cremated.

I am still looking for burials of some of John's siblings and will add them when I do, and I still have requests out for photos of gravestones.

To add or edit your ancestors to find-a-grave you must register for a free account. If you find an ancestor already on find-a-grave that is missing some information you can edit and you will be notified by email when the edit is accepted.  Often if the memorial is made in a batch by a volunteer, the memorial may be transferred to your account.  Once your ancestor memorials are made you can upload images of gravestones, obituaries, etc, write a short bio, and link your family members.  You can request a grave photo if you don't have one. Sometimes this takes a long time depending on the volunteers in that area.

  1. As much as I refer to Findagrave, it has never occurred to me to submit my own photos and create the family connections. I have submitted corrections to others though. I need to get on the stick and make better use of Findagrave.

  3. And I never would have met my Armstrong cousins if not for Findagrave, nor straightened out my Welsh side without the selfless help of a Findagrave volunteer.

  6. Yes!! A volunteer filled my request today and uploaded 2 photos of the grave of my 2x great aunt Cora Porter to my memorial. She is buried in Medford, Mass. And I got a bonus, as that is also where her sister Pearl is buried. I wondered where Pearl was as she was not buried with her husband in Randolph, NH.
Now I have all John Porter's 11 children accounted for.

  7. I am afraid that I haven't used Find a Grave much (as many Australian Graves are not available). However your post has prompted me to start adding my graves for the benefit of others. Thank you. An enjoyable post.

    1. Sometimes you may have to add the cemetery as well. It is all fairly straightforward to do. A good winter project for you :-)

  9. I'm another who hasn't used FindaGrave much but when I visit a cemetery I make a point of photographing plots around those of interest to me and uploading them to Billion Graves.

  10. Whilst I use Find a Grave, I hadn't thought of using it this way. Thanks for the tip!

  11. I don't use Find a Grave very often as I upload to Billion Graves as I'm in cemeteries that are of interest to me. I do look occasionally but had not thought of putting up a memorial.
