A to Z Challenge - M

The Blogging from A to Z Challenge is to post everyday (except Sunday) in the month of April 2016 starting with the letter A and going all the way to Z. The theme I chose is Genealogy Tips. At the end I will give a related post from my blog Genealogy: Beyond the BMD.

NOTE: My comments somehow got turned off yesterday... it is working again and I always value and enjoy your comments.  Thank you.

M is for Medical

I wrote a post in my regular blog about how important it is to know your medical history. A new-found cousin has a disease that the doctor's did not want to diagnose for sure because it is hereditary and they thought there was no history of it in the family.  That was before she found my post! Now her and her family know for sure and can proceed with proper treatment and care.

Where I was born

One of my favourite books is called "Domina" by Barbara Wood. It is about a young woman who struggles to become a doctor in Victorian London. I've read it a few times and soon I'll forget enough that I can read it again.

Do you know your medical history?

  1. We don't know our medical history going way back, but in recent generations breast cancer and ovarian cancer have been significant. It's good to know and has made us all aware of symptoms to watch for.

    1. Both my parents beat a kind of cancer and lived to be over 90. My dear brother died of cancer soon after he retired at age 60. The only one in my family that may have the heart disease is my daughter. Her doctor is keeping a close eye on her.

  2. I am fortunate that both my parents lived healthy lives, both dying at the age of 91, and I am not aware of any hereditary conditions. However when I was expecting my daughter I answered "no" to all such questions in my check ups, only to learn much further down the line that there was a condition in my husband's family, which could have been relevant. Fortunately this did not become an issue. But it pays to know!

    1. How fortunate indeed, and now know what to watch out for in next generations.

  3. Hmmm...medical history...a bit. I think DNA testing might help in that regard but not sure. Love hearing about new-to-me authors. Did not know about Barbara Wood. While we have some of her works in our libraries...just not that title...grrr....

    1. I enjoy all her books. They mostly have a healer heroine.

  4. Definitely think medical history is important. Have one troubling issue in our family that has been hushed up for years but I'm trying to get it out there so others may be treated.
